Within half an hour the blue light of a police car lit up the riverbank. Lucien had taken Seb back inside to the scene of the crime, and he sat against the wall with a towel wrapped around his shoulders, looking about as miserable and dejected as it was possible to be.
There were two policemen—a gruff, burly sergeant and a much younger constable who Lucien thought didn’t look much older than Ben. He had sandy hair, freckles and light green eyes that darted constantly around. They introduced themselves as Sergeant Alf Shaw and PC Rick Dennison. PC Dennison was ordered to take notes while the sergeant asked the questions.
The young PC’s eyes constantly drifted from his notebook to Ben’s unbuttoned shirt, which he had hastily thrown on while he made the phone call. Ben was completely oblivious but Lucien wasn’t.
“Ben, would you mind making some tea while we go through this. I’m bloody freezing.”
As Ben disappeared up the stairs, Lucien’s gaze drilled into the young PC and he went very pale beneath the freckles.
It didn’t take long to get the whole story out of Seb. His whole demeanour seemed to have shrunk in the last half an hour. He had little choice but to admit to the break-in, having been caught virtually red-handed. The sergeant took some details from Lucien about what he had heard and how they had both ended up in the river. Ben came back with a tray of tea, including two mugs for the policemen, and volunteered his own version of events.
When it was all down in writing, the sergeant slurped his tea and cast an amused glance at his colleague, who was trying, unsuccessfully, not to drool in Ben’s direction.
“So, Mr Thorne—sorry, Your Lordship. Just to clarify, you and Mr Astor are…?”
“He’s my boyfriend, sergeant. Is that relevant?”
Lucien glared at PC Dennison rather than his boss. The sergeant chuckled. “Just ensuring we don’t have any misunderstandings. Dennison! Scrape your fucking tongue off the floor and go start up the car before you end up in the river as well!”
Seb was led away in handcuffs and the sergeant promised to keep in touch with any developments.
Lucien turned to Ben. “Unbelievable. You’re not safe even around policemen!”
Ben looked totally bewildered. “What did I do?”
“That’s the problem. You don’t even notice when someone’s looking at you like they want to jump you there and then.”
“Who? The sergeant?”
“Oh, for fuck’s sake. Get upstairs, Benedict.”
As soon as they were inside the flat, Lucien stripped all his clothes off and stood, stark naked, in front of the wood burner. Backlit by the glow of the fire, he rubbed his cold limbs as Ben stared, entranced.
“A bathrobe or towel would be nice, Ben.”
“Oh! Sorry…” Ben fetched his robe and handed it over, disappointed that Lucien would be able to hide his magnificent body. To his surprise, Lucien pulled him close and wrapped him in it too. He rested his head on Lucien’s shoulder and kissed his neck.
“I should be so pissed off at you.
